About the exhibition:
A Chinoy (from Chino, meaning Chinese; and Pinoy, the slang for Filipino) is a Filipino of mixed Chinese and indigenous Filipino descent. Comprising 22% of the population, Chinese Filipinos are one of the largest ethnic groups in the Philippines, and the Chinese comprise the largest group of immigrant settlers. Due to its proximity to mainland China, the Philippines has for centuries attracted both Chinese traders and semi-permanent residents, both as a source of cheap labour, and of capital and business enterprise.
Showcasing for the very first time in Singapore, an island with a predominantly Chinese population, this group of young Filipino painters offer their impressions of The Chinoy Connection in their own homeland. For inspiration, they tap on the rich heritage and cultural practices of the Chinese such as tea-drinking (Malyn Bonayog), the Chinatown streetscape (Ricky Ambagan, Joseph de Juras), specific communitarian services such as volunteer firefighting (Ricardo Adeva Jr), Chinese superstitions and lucky charms (Julmard Vicente, Josue Mangrobang Jr.) or simple chinoiserie (Nelson Bosita). The exhibition has stimulated a cultural reassessment for them, which upon sharing with their Singapore audience promotes cultural exchange.
The opening hours are from Monday-Saturday: 12noon - 8pm and Sunday: 12noon – 5.30pm
