In Love with Marks: Six and counting

Volkswagen Golf Mark I (1974-1983)
The first Golf began production in 1974 was penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, of ItalDesign design studio. It popularized the water-cooled, front wheel drive design pioneered by the Citroën Traction Avant of 1934.

Volkswagen Golf Mark IV (1997-2004)
Volkswagen took the world by storm in 1997 with the Mark IV Golf, with a high-quality interior and higher equipment levels which cars of this size were not accustomed to. The rejuvenated Volkswagen iconic model went on to become the biggest selling car in Europe at one point.

Volkswagen Golf Mark V (2004-2008)
The Golf Mark IV looked “hard” but drove “soft”. Volkswagen poached Ford Europe’s chassis engineering team to work on the Mark V Golf. As a result, the Golf Mark V drove “hard” but looked flaccid.

Volkswagen Golf's Rivals

Mazda3
More of a facelift than a complete new model just like this week's featured car, VW Golf. Pity the 'new' car retains the ancient 4-speed gearbox.

Renault Megane III
Based largely on the previous car, Renault's focus is now on the cabin's perceived quality and reliability. A touch bland for style master, Renault.

Peugeot 308
Peugeot shocked the world with the 308 when it's interior shamed the last VW Golf. Dull driving experience despite excellent turbo engine.

Citroen C3 Picasso
Can this French compact MPV's oddball styling be strong enough to overcome Citroen's quality problems and expected dull driving experience?
