The maddest Golf GTI yet

2007 VW Golf GTI W12 650 Concept
How do you make an outstanding concept for a motoring icon? Simple. Squeeze a W12 cylinder engine that pumps out 650 horsepower into what used to be rear passenger seats. As a showcar, the Golf GTI W12-650 looks stunning with its ultra wide tracks, monster sized wheels and chunky bodyworks.

With 650 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque at 4,500rpm, the GTI W12-650 storms from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 secs and has a top-speed of 325 km/h. No other hot hatch will ever close. The concept car was first unveiled at the Wörthersee in the Austrian state of Kärnten during the five days of Mardi Gras in May 2007. The Golf GTI W12-650 is lariest Golf GTI yet.

Golf GTIs (Mark II to Mark V)

Mark II - 1983
Featured a larger bodyshell and a DOHC 1781 cc (1.8) 16-valve version of the straight-four. Was widely considered an even better driving tool than the Mark I.

Mark IV - 1997
Serious (over)weight issues that blunted performance and induced clumsy handling. The Mark IV Golf was sadly remembered only for it's quality and handsome styling.

Mark III - 1991
It was dark times for the largest German manufacturer and it reflects on the poorest GTI ever. The sporty Golf role was fulfilled by the Golf VR6 launched a year later.

Mark V - 2004
Gave us the sawn-off steering wheel with telephone alloys. But more importantly it renewed interest in the iconic GTI branding. One of the greatest comeback ever.

The firestarter: MK I Golf GTI

The first Golf GTi was hatched in 1981 with a then anticipated run of 5000 units. By the mid 1980's Volkswagen had to churn out 5000 units every month. With 110 horsepower, the MK I Golf GTi could make the 0-100 KM/H dash in 9.8 secs. Respectable performance back then coupled with heroic handling abilities and all round usability; the MK I Golf GTi became the "IT" car in the 80's that showed the world how a "reality" mobile should be; reasonable pricing with sports car slaying performance in a hatchback.
