Today I'm excited to talk to you about a new feature we've added to the site - live realtime chat!
This is one of the most common feature requests we've received, and we're happy to finally be able to deliver it to our members. You can now use Fridae Chat to talk live with other Fridae members in your browser - no additional software downloads needed!
When you sign into your account, you'll notice a new option in your user console:

Our chat area currently consists of 3 pages:
- Introduction - rules, and connection information
- Room List - showing the hundreds of rooms we've created for you guys
- Chat - launches our chat room interface
When you hit the big "Launch Chat" button, our chat interface will open up:

On the left of the window you'll see our chat room list. Rooms are nested and grouped into multiple levels - click on the plus signs to drill down to deeper levels, or click on a room name to join the room. We've created rooms for a lot of locations around the world, and also added some special interest rooms and also some safe "women-only" rooms.
Fridae Chat is currently in beta. This means we are testing it out and expect to encounter some bugs. We've worked hard to build the service, and we feel that its ready to be exposed to some real-world testing from you guys :)
After the beta period is over, we'll be limiting Free Members to 90 minutes in chat each day. Perks Members won't have a time limit.
Technical stuff
Fridae Chat is built using one of the most widespread online chat protocols - IRC.
We've customised our server in a few important ways:
- you need to log in with your Fridae username and password - this is so you can always find the profile and information of users you're talking to
- you can't change your nickname (same reason)
- users can't create their own chat rooms - if you want a new room created, contact us and suggest it
Because we're using IRC, it means you can connect to our chat service using any IRC client. We did this so our members don't have to come to our site to use our chat service. This makes it easier for users to connect using applications they're more confortable with, like mIRC, Trillian, Pidgin or Adium.
FridaeBot
We have an automated "bot" (robot) called FridaeBot who sits in all our chat rooms.
FridaeBot will remove users who use up their 90 minute daily time limit (but we're not enforcing that limit at the moment), and can respond to some basic user queries. He can also guard channels that have access restrictions (for example, age or gender) and remove users who don't meet the requirements.
FridaeBot will get more features as Fridae Chat evolves over time :)

We also added the number of users currently in chat to the masthead "Whos Online" area.
