The 6th Taiwan Pride Parade held on Saturday, September 27, 2008 in Taipei set a new high for pride parades in Asia with a turnout of 18,000.
Themed "Run the Rainbow Way", Taiwan Pride Parade 2008 took off on a cool autumn afternoon on Sep 27 (Saturday) from the Taipei City Hall Square overlooked by the Taipei 101 skyscraper. Over a hundred teams and organizations marched in the parade, including many civil society groups from beyond the LGBT communities. In a true display of courage and determination, friends, families and the LGBTS (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and straight) communities of Taiwan were joined by supporters from the US, Hong Kong, Mainland China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and around the world to make Asia’s largest ever pride event a huge success. At around 3.30 pm, about 18,000 people stood still on Taipei city’s main thoroughfare Zhongxiao East Road Section 4 to create the spectacular view of a flowing rainbow moving along a 100-metre stretch of the street.
This year’s parade saw for the first time, disabled participants among the contingents, led by wheelchair-bound LGBT activist Vincent. Pop vocalist Chou Hui appeared as the mystery guest performer at the concert and revealed some queer family secrets at the concert to conclude this year’s parade.
