Queers, it's another kick-ass week for movies!
There's certainly something for everyone, from an ultra-cool Japanese fantasy-horror, to an utterly charming trannie comedy, to an acclaimed Japanese samurai drama by the master of samurai movies himself.
The absolute must-watch of the week is Nightmare Detective, a bold and unforgettable Japanese horror-fantasy that tells a fascinating tale of a man who is capable of entering your dreams and directing your thoughts. Before you can say Nightmare on Elm Street, Nightmare Detective trumps your expectations by serving you plenty of original plot twists and haunting images.
Directed by Shinya Tsukamoto, the film will impress even the most jaded moviegoers. Don't miss this superb cinematic treat!
On the other hand, those of you looking for a slower-paced, more realistic drama should place their bets on Love and Honour instead, the last part of the acclaimed samurai trilogy by Yoji Yamada. It is a quiet but affecting film about a samurai's (Takuya Kimura) sad fate after he loses his eyesight.
Like the other two parts of the trilogy (Twilight Samurai and The Hidden Blade), the film bears all the hallmark of an old-fashioned classic — strong acting, assured direction, a fine script and solid art direction.

NOTHING SHORT OF TALENT
on Fridae People
Inspired by Alfian
Sa'at's groundbreaking gay play Landmarks: Asian Boys Vol. 2, 23-year-old Boo Junfeng's short film Katong Fugue is now competiting in the Singapore International Film Festival. He tells us how the LGBT audience's encouraging response to his multiple award-winning film A Family Portrait has motivated him to make The Widow of Fort Road. more>>

| Finally, we're happy to recommend the gayest film of week, 20 Centimetres. Bright and campy, it tells the hilarious story of a pre-op transsexual who meets the man of his dreams. This musical-comedy also boasts some wonderfully choreographed song-and-dance numbers. A must-see for all queers.
Well folks, that's all from us this week. See you in the cinema! |

REV UP TO MORE HEATED DRAMA
Last week was a busy time for the Fridae Private Preview series, when we brought you two outstanding Asian movies end-to-end — first with award-winning newcomer Bryant Chang Jui-Chia and heartthrob Joseph Chang Hsiao-Chuan playing out their love story in Eternal Summer (Shengxia Guangnian), which was followed by the Japanese suspense thriller Nightmare Detective, starring the enigmatic Matsuda Ryuhei from the homoerotic movies Big Bang Love: Juvenile A and Gohatto.
This week is the time to worship leather jackets and boots — and the men in them, in the bike adventure movie Wild Hogs — starring John Travolta, Tim Allen and William H Macy. Also lined up this weekend is South-Asian beauty Aishwarya Rai in Provoked. She plays an abused wife who gets rid of her brutal husband with her own hands and found that she is not alone in her suffering. The story is based on the true story behind the U.K. court case of Regina vs Aluwalia.

Director: Shinya Tsukamoto
Cast: Ryuhei Matsuda, Hitomi, Masanobu Ando, Ren Ohsuji, Sinhya Tsukamoto

Shinya Tsukamoto is one of the coolest Japanese filmmakers alive. His debut film Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) shocked the world with its nightmarish depiction of people turning into metal as a manifestation of their sado-masochistic instincts. The protagonist, for instance, had a penis that transformed into a massive power drill when he had an erection. When the film was released in 1989, Tsukamoto was instantly praised for his daring and utterly original vision.
His new film, Nightmare Detective, continues to display his impressive powers of imagination. Ryuhei Matsuda plays a man who is able to hear people's thoughts and enter the realms of their dreams. When a number of people are found to have committed suicide by slashing their wrists in their sleep, a detective (Japanese pop singer Hitomi in her acting debut) is assigned to the case. She discovers that all the victims had been dialing a certain mobile number just before they died. When she decides to call the number too, she gets sucked into a bizarre world of shadows and intrigue...
Nightmare Detective is a bold and distinctive film that consistently surprises you with its twists and revelations. Tsukamoto's extreme surreal/expressionistic vision calls to mind the visceral and unnerving images of other maverick directors such as David Cronenberg (Videodrome), David Lynch (Blue Velvet) and Terry Gilliam (Brazil). Whoever said that J-horror is dead is wrong, wrong, wrong.
Queer movie lovers, don't miss this cool, original and utterly thrilling film.

We'll get to the review in a moment. First we have to tell you about the absolutely gorgeous singer-actor Pablo Puyol, whose masculine looks and solid Tom-of-Finland physique had us lusting after him ever since we saw the movie. Not only that, Pablo even goes completely nude for one scene, allowing our collective jaws to drop at the sight of his sizeable manhood and his gorgeous bubble butt.
In this hilarious musical-comedy, Monica Cervera plays a pre-op transsexual with an impressively large penis — 20 cm to be exact. She is also narcoleptic, which means she has an inconvenient tendency to fall asleep anytime anywhere. Like all trannies, Monica dreams of being a full-fledged woman without a joystick between her thighs.
Then she meets the gorgeous fruit-seller Pablo who just loves to give blowjobs and take it up his a**. Of course, Pablo is impressed by the large appendage that Monica has, and the two embark on a passionate affair. The question is: Should or shouldn't Monica cut her penis off? If she does, she may lose the cock-fixated Pablo — possibly the hottest man on the face of the earth...
Directed by Ramon Salazar, this outrageous Spanish musical-comedy owes a great debt to early Pedro Almodovar films like Law of Desire and Kika. The florid settings, the bizarre characters, the unpredictable storyline and the campy, brazen humour are all reminiscent of his films.
Ramon, however, goes one step further by having Monica burst into song-and-dance every time she falls into a deep sleep and starts dreaming. She sings classics by Queen, Madonna, Dusty Springfield, and does one hilarious parody of Michael Jackson's Thriller music video.
This is the gayest film of the week. Catch it! |

This is the third part of Yoji Yamada's acclaimed samurai trilogy.
It began with 2002's Twilight Samurai, a rare and affecting portrait of an ageing samurai that swept a record 12 Japanese Academy Awards, including Best Picture. And it continued with 2004's The Hidden Blade, also a quiet yet powerful depiction of the life of a middle-aged samurai.
The closing chapter of his trilogy is another sublime and minimalist drama. Takuya Kimura plays a low-ranking samurai who is in charge of tasting the food of his clan's lord. One day, he is poisoned by bad shellfish and goes blind. As his career prospects and his marriage falls apart, the young samurai goes off the deep end.
Yoji Yamada's samurai films are an acquired taste. They are slow and gentle meditations on the sadness of life and they are guaranteed to put young LGBT viewers to sleep. But for those who have lived a little and have a better understanding of the human condition, Yamada's quiet films speak volumes.

Director: Billy Ray
Cast: Chris Cooper, Ryan Phillippe, Laura Linney, Caroline Dhavernas, Gary Cole, Dennis Haysbert |

|
Well-acted and solidly directed, this psychological study of two FBI spies is one of the most intelligent and engrossing films playing in the cinema right now.
Based on a true story, Chris Cooper plays an FBI agent who has been betraying his organization by feeding information to the Russians. The FBI suspects his activities but is unable to gather enough evidence to prosecute him. Hoping to catch him red-handed, the FBI assigns a young and ambitious agent-wannabe (Ryan Phillipe) to spy on his older colleague. A riveting story of deception and counter-deception unfolds as the men slowly start to discover each other's secrets...
Breach is directed by Billy Ray whose last film, Shattered Glass, was also about deception — that of a young and ambitious journalist (Hayden Christensen) who wrote sensational, unfounded stories for his newspaper simply to rise to the top. But in many ways, Breach is a more mature and sophisticated effort compared to Shattered Glass.
For politically-inclined LGBTs.

This comedy centres on four middle-aged men (Tim Allen, William H Macy, Martin Lawrence, John Travolta) who find escape from their boring suburban lifestyles by leathering up and riding around on their motorbikes once a week. They call themselves the Wild Hogs.
When one of them (Travolta) unexpectedly loses his high-flying career and swimsuit-model wife, he convinces the other three to join him on a cross-country motorcycle trip as they search for the real "meaning of life".
Their tents get burnt down and they run into some trouble with a motorcycle cop (John C. McGinley from Scrubs). But the worst that happens is when one of them "accidentally" blows up the bar of a real motorbike gang (led by Ray Liotta). With the gang now hot on their heels, the Wild Hogs must now find a way to beat them...
Predictable and ridden with cliches, Wild Hogs is a movie that will probably please many straight white-collar middle-aged men.
