Directed by: Robert Schwentke

Holy Mother of God! Why are the new movies this week so awful?

It’s truly disappointing to watch terrific actors, talented directors and fine studios produce such duds, especially when their previous works were exceptional.

One of the worst this week is I Love You, Beth Cooper. This teen flick is directed by Chris Columbus, who helmed the first two Harry Potter films along with other hits like Mrs Doubtfire. However, Beth Cooper is unfunny, uninspired and wholly unoriginal, stealing from seminal teen flicks like Sixteen Candles and Superbad.

Equally unfunny, uninspired and unoriginal is G-Force, the kiddie movie from Disney about a group of FBI-trained guinea pigs saving the world from destruction. Trust us, you’d be more entertained watching Animal Planet.

The movie that many of us have been looking forward to but felt sorely disappointed after watching is The Time Traveler’s Wife, based on the worldwide romantic bestseller by Audrey Niffenegger. Despite the excellent source material and the star power of Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana, the sci-fi romance is unconvincing and dissatisfying.

Last and certainly least, there’s the god-awful Dance Flick which spoofs popular dance movies like Fame, High School Musical and Flashdance. And we thought Date Movie and Disaster Movie were bad.

Tokyo, Japan | 19 SEP - 23 SEP 2009
Asian Queer Film Festival

The biennial Asian Queer Film Festival began in Japan in 2007 and is devoted exclusively to screening queer films from Asia. The films for AQFF are selected with an eye to supporting Asian indies writers so independently produced films are prominent in the AQFF lineup.

For all of us who identify with and as Asian sexual minorities, this is one of the few chances in Japan to see films that explore our sexuality. Through this exhibition of visual culture, we can deepen our understanding of sexual minorities in Asia today.

Audrey Tautou gives a superb performance of Coco Chanel, one of the most influential figures of fashion.

The Cove

The Cove is a powerful expose of a group of fishermen who trap and kill dolphins illegally in a cove – kinda like Schindler’s List, except with dolphins.
District 9

It’s been called the ‘Must-see Movie of the Summer’. We can’t help but agree.
Bruno

Bruno is loud, vain, flamboyant, smug, bitchy, rude, selfish, dishonest, outrageous, mean and oversexed. What’s to like?
