Change

2008 was all about wanting change. And you know what, 2009 has been all about changes. In August, we debuted our new newsletter layout and this week, Fridae Movie Club is proud to introduce our new movie reviewer, Vernon Chan as he starts the ball rolling with 2012.

Appropriately 2012 is all about change as well. No one wants more change than German director Roland Emmerich as he dishes out yet another disaster movie that threatens to change the face of the earth. CGI-fans are in for a treat as 2012 has earthquakes, exploding super-volcanos, tsunamis and more.

If Cloverfield was the Blair Witch Project of 2008, then we have just caught 2009’s "BWP"; Paranormal Activity. Such “documentary” films can certainly be life-changing for the ones who dare to dream. Paranormal Activity is now the most profitable independent film of all time.

Now I am going to daydream about becoming the maker of 2010’s “BWP”. Hope you guys have a great time at the big screens this week!

20th Hong Kong Lesbian & Gay Film Festival

The Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival has now lasted for two decades. This is a testament to the work of our pioneers like Edward Lam and Wouter Barendretch, and the first generation team of HKLGFF who helped to build up a solid foundation.

This year's selection of queer films cover so many themes; like coming out, gay marriage and adoption. These movies are more than just a form of entertainment. During the two weeks of the festival we hope to that everyone will learn more about queer lives and themes from across the world.

Made on the cheap for around US$15,000, Paranormal Activity has been a phenomenal success in the USA, making over US$90 million at the box office to date, and becoming the most profitable independent film of all time. But is it really any good?

Humpday

Humpday tells the story of two straight guys who decide to test the limits of their manhood by (hooray!) having gay sex with each other. This bromance manages the rare feat to be both perceptive and hilarious.

Seemingly not a year goes by without a Saw movie; however this one springs a few pleasant surprises for horror and gore movie fans.
